‘Small is beautiful’ is a one time best seller where the essence was conservation of resources. That title somehow got embedded in my memory and I always try to analyze events around me in the context of this small phrase. True, a small step of Neil Armstrong on the moon was a big leap for the mankind or small steps in unison in a military parade is an expression of strength. For something big to happen in a society, we have to involve everybody in the society to take small steps in same frequency behind a big idea. That is when the small is beautiful. The Nature has its own laws. When we respect that law and take small steps, for instance, to harness micro – hydel power, probably the nature forgives. But when we try to take up large dams like the ones on Narmada , not only do we irk the nature but also a large number of helpless people by uprooting them from their inhabitance, livelihood and culture. To me it is like taking a big step behind a small, short – sighted idea and this lop – sided small – is it beautiful?
